What is Profihlo used for?
Indications
Profihlo can be used to treat skin laxity and skin quality, almost anywhere, common indications include the face, neck, décolletage, hands, and inner arms.
- skin quality improves, the skin becomes firmer and has a lovely glow
- elimination of "hamster-like" cheeks
- restored facial contours
- slimmer facial features
- sagging skin
- flabby skin - skin suppleness and elasticity
- vertical and horizontal wrinkles on the face
The treatment targets skin that lacks volume and elasticity, making it ideal for anyone over the age of 25 who is experiencing some skin laxity, crepe-like skin or fine lines and wrinkles.
After Profihlo treatment, you will notice that your skin looks and feels smoother, firmer, more hydrated and radiant. In fact, your skin quality should improve for up to six months.
How does Profihlo work?
The product contains one of the highest concentrations of hyaluronic acid (HA) on the market but it isn’t a dermal filler (which is the aesthetic treatment most associated with HA) or a wrinkle-relaxing injection.
Instead, Profihlo might be best described as a “bio-remodeller” in that it stimulates natural healing processes within your body. The treatment works in two phases, hydrating your skin and then stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin (a process known as neocollagenesis).
As you may already know, HA is a naturally-occurring substance in our skin, joints and connective tissues. It holds 1000 times its weight in water and its primary roles are to retain and bind moisture to the skin and to aid collagen production. This is what Profihlo taps into.
How is Profihlo different to HA-based Dermal Fillers?
Without going too deeply into the science here, the ingredients in Profihlo are thermally-bonded (i.e. using heat) rather than chemically-bonded, which is how dermal fillers are made.
This process changes the composition and use of the HA, making it perfect for hydrating the skin rather than filling smaller areas.
As a result, Profihlo offers a runnier, gel-like substance that – when injected – smoothly spreads out and is absorbed within a 2cm radius of the injection site. It doesn’t need to be massaged or leave lumps or nodules.
Due to each injection covering a larger surface area, you would typically need just 10 injections with ultra-fine needles to treat your entire face.
Is Profihlo safe to use?
As HA occurs naturally in the human body and the product doesn’t use any synthetic chemicals, Profihlo is effortlessly metabolised, causing no known long-term side effects.
In the short-term, the only known side effects are that a small percentage of people experience bruising, redness or swelling at the injection sites but this self-corrects within a couple of days.
Does that mean that anyone can have treatment with Profihlo?
As with most injectable treatments, we would recommend that you don’t have a Profihlo treatment if you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
Also, it should be avoided if you are allergic to hyaluronic acid.
What does the treatment involve and how long do Profihlo results last?
A Profihlo treatment only takes between 10 and 30 minutes to administer. Our Aesthetics Practitioner needs to inject just below your skin’s surface at approximately 10 points in your face to administer the product to the whole area.
Other parts of your body such as your hands, neck or décolleté may need a different amount.
You should notice that your skin starts to look more hydrated and luminous within just three to five days. Over the following few weeks, Profihlo will start to stimulate your skin’s collagen and elastin production, creating a gentle skin tightening effect.
You will need a second treatment four weeks after treatment one. The maximum effect of Profihlo is usually seen two months after that second treatment and should last for approximately six months. You can then choose to have a follow-up treatment with Profihlo to maintain the results.
Does Profihlo require any downtime?
The downtime with Profhilo is minimal. After approximately 30 minutes here at Revive, you should be able to return to your normal ‘light’ activities, including driving.
We do recommend that you avoid wearing make-up for 24 hours and that you take a day off from strenuous physical exercise, such as visiting the gym or playing your favourite sport.
Avoid saunas or a steamy bath, as well as intense sun of UV light, for three to four days.
You may not be suitable for treatment if any of the following apply:
- Dermal fillers cannot be given to pregnant or breast-feeding women and is not recommended if you are actively trying to get pregnant or undergoing IVF.
- If you suffer from keloid scarring or have active skin conditions, such as acne or psoriasis.
- If you have certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune conditions, blood clotting disorders, cancer, immunosuppression (either medical or drug-related).
- If you are suffering from any skin infection in or near the treatment area, including cold sores.
- If you are suffering from any other infection, including dental, throat, ear, chest, or sinus infections.
- If you are unwell, including coughs and colds, on the day of treatment.
- If you are taking any medicines which affect bleeding, such as aspirin or warfarin.
- If you have had Roaccutane® or isotretinoin in the past 6 months.
- Certain allergies, including bee sting allergy.
- Recent facial surgery or other dermal fillers in the same area.
- Permanent implants, such as silicone implants in the face or pins and plates.
Pre-treatment advice
- Avoid taking anti-inflammatories (such as aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen) for 3 days prior to treatment (unless this has been prescribed by your doctor) as this increases the risk of bruising.
- Alcohol, fish oils, St. John's Wort, Gingko Biloba and Vitamin E should also be avoided for 3 days prior to treatment to lessen the risk of bruising.
- If you are prone to bruising, taking arnica orally for a few days prior to treatment may lessen the risk.
- If you are unwell on the day of your appointment, contact the practitioner to reschedule.
- Avoid sunbeds and tanning for 1 week before and after treatment.
- Ensure your practitioner is informed if there are any changes in your medical history or medication taken before receiving any treatment.
- Do not plan to have treatment within 2 weeks of an important social event or holiday as this may not allow enough time for side-effects, such as bruising to settle, or to have a review appointment.
Post-treatment advice
After treatment, most people can resume their normal daily activities. Immediately after treatment, there may be some redness, tenderness and swelling at the injection sites and there will likely be visible lumps at the injection sites.
Bruising may be obvious immediately after treatment and may be quite pronounced.
Although there is little evidence, many practitioners advise the following:
- Do not apply make-up for 12 hours after treatment to reduce the risk of infection.
- Avoid saunas, swimming pools and sunbeds until the initial swelling and redness has settled.
- Try to avoid touching or rubbing the treated area until the following day, as you may affect the results of treatment or cause infection, unless otherwise advised by your treating practitioner.
- Massage of the area is not required; the product will diffuse naturally on its own.
- Avoid extremes of hot or cold and vigorous exercise until the initial swelling has resolved.
- If swelling persists, you may be advised to apply a cool pad to help remedy this.
- Do not plan to have treatment within 2 weeks of an important social event or holiday as this may not allow enough time for side-effects, such as bruising to settle, or to have a review appointment.
